The Department of Geology is proud to announce that alumna, Marina Suarez, Ph.D 2009, was recently awarded a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award (CAREER) to support her global research on Cretaceous paleoclimatology. Dr. Suarez completed her doctoral studies at KU under the co-supervision of Dr. Luis Gonzalez, Chair of the Department of Geology, and Dr. Gregory Ludvigson of the Kansas Geological Society.
Suarez is currently an assistant professor of geology at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). The CAREER Award included a $478,000 grant to support her extensive research in paleoclimatology. She will study Cretaceous rocks in China, Spain, Utah and Texas. She is hoping her research will impact existing studies on climate change and provide new information to world leaders concerned about the effects of climate change across the globe.
