Financial Support

All applicants to the graduate program are automatically considered for Dept. of Geology fellowships, scholarships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships. Financial Support: Fellowship and Scholarship Opportunities

The University of Kansas, Department of Geology is offering a substantial number of one-year fellowships and scholarships for incoming M.S. and Ph.D. students, each funded at the $20,000–$22,000 level. As reasonable progress is made toward the degree, fellowship, scholarship, graduate teaching assistantships (GTA), or graduate research assistantships (GRA) support is guaranteed up to the second year of the M.S. and fourth year of the Ph.D. program. Particular areas of specialty may include geomicrobiology, thermochronology, organic hydrogeochemistry, trace fossils, sequence stratigraphy, petroleum geology, invertebrate paleontology, hydrogeology, diagenesis, carbonate rocks, clastic rocks, tectonics, Precambrian geology, structural geology, near-surface geophysics, GIS, geochronology, and petrology.

Possible support for outstanding Ph.D. students comes from the Self Fellowship Program. The Self Graduate Fellowship is a four-year award consisting of an annual $23,000 stipend, full tuition and fees, and a development program. The mission of the University of Kansas Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship is to identify, recruit, and provide development opportunities for exceptional Ph.D. students in the sciences, engineering, business, and economics who demonstrate the promise to make significant contributions to their fields of study and society as a whole. Interested students can be nominated through the Dept. of Geology. Because of the deadlines for the Self Program, interested students are urged to have their application material to the Dept. of Geology by January 15.
