Leigh Stearns recently co-authored an article with Dustin Carroll from the University of Oregon that was cited in a subsequent Washington Post article titled "Greenland is melting from above and from below - and scientists say they are connected." The WaPo article directly addresses the findings originally published in Geophysical Research Letters (GRL) where Stearns and other outlined one way that Greenland glaciers are changing due to a warming climate. The article in the Washington Post was published on October 11 and was written by Chris Mooney who reports on science and the environment for the newspaper.
In the GRL article Stearns and her co-authors investigate causes of the quadrupling of mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet from 1992 to 2011. The researchers wanted to uncover what was responsible for the melting process. What they discovered was that there are two components that may be responsible for the melting; subglacial plumes which can cause significant localized terminus melt and the impact of ice melting on the glacier surface. The title of Stearns's article is: "The impact of glacier geometry on meltwater plume structure and submarine melt in Greenland fjords." Other co-authors of the Geophysical Research Letters article include: D.A. Sutherland, B. Hudson, T. Moon, G.A. Catania, E.L. Shroyer, J.D. Nash, T.C. Bartholomaus, D. Felikson, B.P.Y. Noel, and M.R. van den Broeke.
