Geology Graduate MS


The Department of Geology awards Master of Science (MS) degrees, which prepares students for a variety of geoscience careers. This degree program, usually completed in two years, requires coursework, a research project and thesis.

MS in Geology Required Coursework

Geology has many sub disciplines, and the department tailors each student’s curriculum to the needs and interests of the individual. There is no departmental core curriculum.

Required credit hours:

  • 30 credits, with at least 50% of coursework for the master’s degree taken at 700 level or above

Required Courses:

  • GEOL 701: Graduate Student Professional Skills and Ethics (2 credits, see below)
  • GEOL 899: Master’s Thesis.  6 credit hours for thesis research may count towards the degree.

 

The Department of Geology offers a 2-credit training course, GEOL 701: Graduate Student Professional Skills and Ethics, during the fall semester each year, which is required for every student in their first year of graduate studies.
