Keck-NSF Paleoenvironmental and Environmental Laboratory

The University of Kansas W.M. Keck – NSF Paleoenvironmental and Environmental Laboratory directed by Dr. Randy Stotler and managed by Mr. Bruce Barnett. The laboratory is located in the Earth, Energy and Environment Center's Slawson Hall. The laboratory has capabilities for bulk and compound-specific stable isotopic analyses of H (2H/1H), C (13C/12C), N (15N/14N), and O (18O/16O) in inorganic and organic samples. Materials we analyze include carbonates, bulk organic matter (TOC), water, gases, and gases dissolved in water.

The laboratory houses two ThermoFinnigan Mat 253 Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometers and two Picarro Cavity Ring Down Spectrometers (CRDS). The first 253 is exclusively a continuous flow system coupled with a ThermoFinnigan TC/EA, a ThermoFinnigan GASBENCH II, and a Costech Elemental Analyzer, all interfaced via a Conflo III, and a ThermoFinnigan Trace GC ultra interfaced via a GC/C III. The second 253 operates in either dual-inlet or continuous-flow mode coupled with a ThermoFinnigan KIEL IV interfaced to the dual-inlet. A NewWave MIR 10-30 CO2 laser system is available and can be interfaced to either mass-spectrometer. A Picarro L2120-i CRDS, interfaced with an Induction Module or an A0211 vaporizer and PAL autosampler, provides 2H/1H and 18O/16O analysis of water and water vapor. The Picarro G2201-i CRDS analyzes 13C/12C in CO2 and/or CH4, and can be coupled with the A0301 liaison and AutoMate prep device. The laboratory currently houses two micro-balances, one micro drill, and a variety of liquid-handling (micro-volumes) systems. All instrumentation is optimized to handle the smallest sample sizes at the highest precision.
